On the Day

What to Expect on the Day

At PureStart, we understand that bringing your child in for circumcision can feel like a big moment for any family. That’s why our goal is to make the experience as smooth, calm, and reassuring as possible—from the moment you walk through our doors to when you leave with confidence in your child’s care.

This guide will walk you through exactly what happens on the day of the procedure, so you know what to expect and feel fully prepared.

1

A Warm Welcome

Our friendly reception team will greet you when you arrive. You’ll check in at the front desk, then take a seat in the waiting area while we prepare to see your child.

2

Quick Document Checks

As part of our routine safety checks, we’ll confirm:

  • Your child’s birth certificate
  • Their red book
  • Photo ID for both parents

If you’re unsure whether you have the right documents, feel free to contact our team in advance—we’re happy to help.

3

Confirming Consent

You will have already completed the full consent process during your pre-operative consultation. On the day, we’ll simply confirm that both parents remain happy to proceed and are clear on the details of the procedure and aftercare.

4

Health Check

Before the circumcision, the doctor will carry out a brief examination to ensure everything is in order and there are no medical reasons to delay or cancel the procedure. If we do find anything concerning, we’ll explain it clearly and offer a full refund if the procedure cannot go ahead.

The Procedure

We use the Plastibell (Ring) technique, performed under local anaesthetic. Here’s what the process involves:

Step 1 – Preparation
  • Your child’s skin will be gently cleaned with an antiseptic solution.
  • A small amount of local anaesthetic will be applied to numb the area.
  • The anaesthetic will take effect within 1-2 minutes, ensuring your child won’t feel pain, though they may feel some pressure or movement.
Step 2 – Dorsal Slit
  • A small slit is made in the foreskin (called a dorsal slit).
  • This step separates the foreskin from the head of the penis.
  • The procedure is done carefully to ensure proper alignment for the next step.
Step 3 – Securing the Plastibell
  • The Plastibell ring is gently placed around the foreskin just below the head of the penis.
  • A small thread is tied around the ring to cut off the blood supply to the foreskin.
  • The Plastibell stays in place to help guide the healing process.

After the Procedure

  • The doctor will check your child again to make sure there is no bleeding and that the urinary opening is clear.
  • We’ll show you how to change nappies while the area heals and advise you on pain relief.
  • You’ll be given written and verbal aftercare instructions to take home.
  • Emergency contact information will be provided in case you need us.
  • Once we’re satisfied everything is safe and your child is comfortable, we’ll discharge you with a letter to give to your GP.
