Circumcision Aftercare Guide

What to Expect After the Procedure
-
You will stay at the clinic for 60 minutes after the procedure so we can monitor your baby and ensure everything is fine before you go home.
-
It is normal to see small spots of blood in the nappy where the wound touches the skin.
-
The penis may appear red and swollen for up to 10 days, which is part of the healing process.
-
The Plastibell ring will naturally fall off within 4-10 days. If it has not come off after 12 days, please contact us for guidance.
Caring for the Wound
Keeping the area clean and dry is crucial for a smooth recovery:
-
No baths for 24 hours. After this, gently sit your baby in lukewarm salt water twice a day (morning and evening) to keep the wound clean.
-
Change nappies regularly to keep the area dry.
-
Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly (e.g., Vaseline) on the front of the nappy to prevent the wound from sticking.
-
You may choose to leave the nappy off for short periods in the first few days to allow airflow.

Pain Management
-
Your baby received a local anaesthetic, which helps numb the area for 4-6 hours.
-
Some discomfort is expected, but babies feel pain differently than adults.
-
We will discuss pain relief options with you before you leave the clinic.
-
Cuddling, rocking, and skin-to-skin contact can help soothe your baby.
Feeding and Comfort
-
Your baby can be fed as normal after the procedure.
-
Some babies may feed slightly less than usual for the first 24 hours due to mild discomfort.
-
Offer frequent feeds and comfort to reassure your baby.
